For over 30 years now I have attended an eclectic mix of Gigs, ranging from intimate nights in the Baggot Inn to watching legends like Tom Waits and Leonard Cohen in Dublin, to the Neville Brothers, Garth Brooks and John Denver in Cologne and more recently an intimate festival in Lisboa featuring Rodrigo y Gabriela and a standout night at LCD Soundsystem on the final night of their European tour.
Having been a regular Gig goer since the late 80’s, I had long thought about putting something together to allow me keep track of the many great Gigs I attended. Some years back I began cataloguing these Gigs. I used a social media platform to host details of the Gigs, as I kept adding to them.
The trawl was not easy but using memory, ticket stubs, band & musician (official & fan) sites, along with resources such as the Hot Press archives and newspaper online reviews, I compiled a comprehensive list of Gigs.
Unfortunately, due to an oversight, bad timing (with more important things in my life taking precedence) and with the multiple sales of and rapid decline of MySpace, I ultimately lost all my online Gig information!
That episode formed for me the beginnings of My Gig’s Place. I wondered why it was not possible to aggregate this information collection process into one place and having compiled the information, have a suitable home to host it, then if required enabling the sharing of this information with others.
We go to all these great Gigs. We pay good money, travel long distances but apart from sketchy memories, the odd ticket stub, or t-shirt and in more recent times our phone memory overflowing with selfies and shaky photos, what do we have left of these great Gigs?
My Gig’s Place offers an alternative ending for all your Gig experiences, allowing you to revisit or share the details for years to come.
Across the street was a small late-night café/restaurant which was often frequented by musicians after they finished their Gigs. It had a great vibe, and I enjoyed many a late night there.
It was called The Gigs Place and although it faded away as a business over the years, it was 2003 before the doors finally closed, and the iconic signage disappeared.
